Another day, another 50-minute drive from Austin to Austin to play at a “local” high school. This is the view from warming up.

I’ll tell you what though, those types of visits made a big impression on kids like me by showing me what it would be like if I stuck with it. Conversely, as a high schooler, we would visit the middle schools and show them what high school band and orchestra could be like if they stuck with it.

We had “young people’s concerts” when I was in Elementary school where  the city’s elementary schools go on a field trip to see the symphony. Easily some of the coolest field trips ever. At least until I got in trouble for pretending to ride a horse in my seat during the William Tell Overture (I was in 2nd grade!).

My middle school chorus would tour the elementary schools and we’d get to miss lots of class.
